I think it is wrong to call the Earth our mother, as that implies that it cares whether we live or die, whether we choose to make our lives easy or hard.

It is quite the opposite; we are the Earth’s stewards for the time that we are here. Except to believe we can do anything to harm something as big as a planet on any scale that would even register is arrogance of the highest order. What we can do is care for the biosphere

because it is the only place in the universe we know intelligence exists

because it is the only place in the universe we know that life exists

because, as smart as we are, every bit of beauty and wonder that is lost is beyond our powers to recreate so is gone forever

because it is the right thing to do

and because, even if none of the above means anything, it is the only home we have.
